History of the RMSLA
2008
![]() RMSLA partners with the Rocky Mountain Raptor Program to provide a new 20-acre venue for the Fair in 2008 and beyond. ![]() Exhibitor booth spaces are increased from 175 to 200. Sure to sell out once again. ![]() RMSLA rebrands the event, now known as The Sustainable Living Fair. ![]() RMSLA sells out 175 booths the first week in August. ![]() Keynote Speakers include Ed Begley Jr., actor and activist, George Siemon, founder of Organic Valley Family of Farms, Kevin Danaher, co-founder of the Green Festivals and Rahima Baldwin Dancy, family educator.
2007
![]() 9574 people attend the 7th Annual Fair, marking the final year at the OxBow venue. ![]() The “Eat Local – Grow Local” workshop area and the Natural Parenting Nook are added to the workshop line-up, attracting attendees interested in sustainable agriculture and families looking for natural parenting information. ![]() RMSLA sells out 175 booths the first week in August. ![]() Keynote Speakers include Amy Goodman, host of Democracy Now!, Peggy O’Mara, publisher of Mothering magazine, John Fielder, nature photograher and Michael Shuman, author and economist. ![]() RMSLF offers carbon offsets for attendee travel. ![]() RMSLF begins an electronics recycling program for fairgoers.
2006
![]() 8000 people attend the 6th Annual Fair, despite 52 mile per hour winds, accompanied by driving rain and hail on Saturday. ![]() A third workshop tent is added to achieve 35 free workshops and 3 extended workshops totalling 54 hours of education. ![]() RMSLA sells out 140 booths establishing a need for firm registration deadlines. ![]() Keynote Speakers include Winona LaDuke founder of the White Earth Recovery Project and Harvey Wasserman, GreenPeace Advisor. ![]() RMSLA releases the first Be Local Coupon Book at the Fair, 3000 copies produced. ![]() RMSLA launches the Tour de Farms annual fundraiser. ![]() RMSLA begins to provide Zero Waste services for regional events. Local company Zero Hero Events forms out of this grassroots effort.
2005
![]() 7500 people attend the 6th Annual Fair from 29 different states. ![]() RMSLA partners with New Belgium Brewing to provide a NEW venue for 2005, at the New Belgium Brewing OxBow. ![]() RMSLA is approved for membership into the Co-op America Business Network and obtains it’s first listing in the 2006 National Green Pages. ![]() 120 vendors join us from across the country. ![]() Keynote Speakers include Yvon Chouinard, founder of Patagonia. ![]() RMSLA raises $3600 for the Katrina Relief fund, September 17, 2005.
2004
![]() 6000 people attend the 5th Annual Fair, which is now the largest event of its kind in the 7-state Rocky Mountain region. ![]() Kids Educational Zone is expanded to include more family oriented activities. ![]() 25 free workshops are offerd over the course of the weekend and extended workshops are offered for the first time. ![]() The Friendly Food Market is implemented, serving concious food in an earth friendly fashion. ![]() 100 vendors fill the streets, RMSLA recognizes the need for a larger venue. ![]() Keynote Speakers include Gary Erickson, owner of Clif Bar and Nick Forster, host of etown.
2003
![]() 4500 people attend the 4th annual Fair, which is expanded to a 2-day event. ![]() The Rocky Mountain Sustainable Living Association is formed as a 501(c)3 organization on March 7, 2003 by current Executive Director, Kellie Falbo. ![]() National Sponsors & Vendors travel from across the country to be represented at the Fair, resulting in a SOLD OUT venue of 100 vendor spaces. ![]() This marks the first year that a nominal admission fee was charged. ![]() The Fair attracts Celebrity interest, with an appearance by Woody Harrelson, Julia “Butterfly” Hill and Jonette Nopalitano.
2002
![]() 3500 people attend the 3rd Annual Fair, which has become a regional event and is now called the Rocky Mountain Sustainable Living Fair. ![]() The first ever Fair video is produced for marketing and promotional purposes. ![]() 73 vendors join us from across the region for this one-day event. ![]() The FREE Alternatively Powered Shuttle program is implemented. ![]() The Fair website is created.
2001
![]() 2000 people attend the 2nd Annual Sustainable Living Fair at the Fort Collins Lincoln Center. ![]() Village Earth is the fiscal sponsor of the Fair, allowing the use of their 501(c)3 status. John Long coordinates the fair with help from the newly formed vounteer Steering Committee. Kellie Falbo, Founder and Executive Director of the Rocky Mountain Sustainable Living Association served on this committee as the Marketing & Publicity Coordinator. ![]() The Zero Was e Goal was established: 850 pounds of waste was produced during the Fair, 833 pounds (98%) was recycled or fed to red worms and ONLY 17 pounds went to the landfill. ![]() Entire event is powered by renewable energy and the phrase “Powered by Nature” is coined.
2000
![]() 1st annual Sustainable Living Fair on the CSU campus, 300 people in attendance. ![]() This event was organized by a group of Colorado State University students, including current Board member, John Long, who took the Fair into it’s second year through his job as Director of Development for Village Earth.
