Sustainable Living Fair Internship

The Sustainable Living Fair Intern will assist in coordinating a wide range of fair priorities, including planning, coordination, marketing, promotion and execution of the Annual Sustainable Living Fair. Some evenings and weekends required.

Tasks could include but are not limited to the following:
  • Event planning and program development
  • Logistical preparation and materials development
  • Venue planning and coordination
  • Sponsor and exhibitor negotiations/ registrations and relations
  • Assist in writing and submitting press releases and coordinating advertising with media
  • Customer service (responding to inquiries, and helping to answer queries, etc.)
  • Maintaining web presence
  • Volunteer coordination and management
  • Build partnerships with other like-minded organizations
  • Fundraising and outreach
  • Administrative/ office support (data entry, file management, etc.)
  • Representing RMSLA at local events and festivals

Depending on their skills and interest, successful interns will develop skills within the overall steps needed to see a public education event implemented successfully. Through organizing the Sustainable Living Fair, this intern will have access to many educational training opportunities as well as to helpful contacts within the sustainable community. Depending on their skills and interest, successful interns will develop skills within the logistical and hands-on implementation of educational experiences centered on sustainable living. Interns will also acquire additional skills in marketing, event planning and program management.

Qualifications

We are seeking dynamic, organized and enthusiastic people with a passion for detail oriented planning and enthusiastic/creative public interaction. These interns are expected to be dynamic, organized, and high energy with some event planning and/or volunteer coordination experience. Multitasking and detail management is a large part of the responsibilities and these interns are critical to the quality and overall success of the Sustainable Living Fair. Therefore, Sustainable Living Fair interns must be thorough and professional with little supervision. Applicants should be flexible, energetic, comfortable in groups of people, and able to manage a broad diversity of challenges at once. A good sense of humor, positive and enthusiastic attitude, and willingness to learn are essential attributes of prospective interns. While training will be provided in all areas as necessary, prerequisite/preferred qualities include:

  • Successful experience in managing multiple projects, including ability to create and follow timelines
  • Strong organizational and time management skills, with attention to detail
  • Excellent verbal & written communication skills
  • Ability to problem solve, frequently on the spot
  • Excellent computer & internet skills
  • Experience communicating with the media; writing press releases, submitting public service announcements
  • Customer service and administrative experience
  • Ability to follow through on projects with little supervision
  • Experience with event planning
  • Experience with volunteer outreach and coordination
  • Versed in social networks, blogs, twitter, video
  • Ability to work with changing priorities as needed
  • Team player, flexible and compassionate

Hours and Compensation:

The Sustainable Living Fair Internship lasts seven months and is unpaid. During their time at the organization, interns are required to work 15 hours per week. Workload may vary throughout the seven months with periodic peaks of high-level time commitment during the months leading up to the Fair. Some evenings and weekends required.
