Future Friday

Future Friday 2011– Food Matters

FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 16, 2011

Future Friday is a day dedicated to Sustainability topics and concepts for all students from Fort Collins area schools presented through a collaboration of the Rocky Mountain Sustainable Living Association and the Poudre School District. This program is offered in-schools k – 12.

The theme of FUTURE FRIDAY this year is Food Matters. Food is essential to life. How we, as a global society, produce and consume food impacts the health of human beings, the economic health of the local and global communities, cultural practices, as well as the health of the planet. Every facet of human existence is touched by food and its production. Every child must eat, so food is an excellent way to teach children about sustainability. Future Friday is a great opportunity for PSD to showcase it’s efforts toward more sustainable, wholesome, fresh, local and healthy food in school cafeterias.

Future Friday Program 2011

  • PSD Child Nutrition Department will feature several seasonal local and organic produce items on salad and fresh bars in all cafeterias throughout the district. There will be ‘from scratch’ items available throughout the week and on Future Friday as well.  Labels will signify the fresh, local and from scratch items and the posters urge students to choose those items.
  • High School Environmental Club students, Parent Nutrition Advocates, local farmers and other regional sustainability experts will be visiting various schools and classrooms to discuss food system topics such as: healthy eating, Farm to School, food justice and volunteering opportunities, and local food systems.
  • Alec Loorz, 17 year old founder of Kids vs Global Warming and iMatter March will be speaking at Poudre High School in conjunction with Alliance For Climate Education.

Look for the posters, buttons and t-shirts in your school cafeteria and ask your cafeteria staff about Future Friday!
