Workshops at The Sustainable Living Fair

Our educational programs and workshops offer creative solutions that deliver valuable benefits, improving the relationship between people and the environment.

These programs encourage an ongoing dialogue which leads to a better understanding and respect for our individual connection to the global community.

Included with your admission, is access to more than 50 workshops and demonstrations presented over the course of the weekend. Our Workshop Presenters travel from across the country to bring you the most current and accurate information out there today!

If you are interested in presenting a workshop at the Fair, complete the Workshop Presenter Proposal form and submit it to our Workshop Coordinator at your earliest convenience (please note the submission deadlines).

Extended Workshops at The Sustainable Living Fair
Each year we feature a few extended workshops that allow participants to take part in the presentation. These workshops range from Strawbale Construction to Building a Wind Turbine! If you would like to participate in one of our Extended Workshops you will need to register in advance! These workshops are limited on the number of participants and will be filled on a first-come basis. Check back regularly for available workshops and registration details.

Homebrew Wind Turbine Workshop - EXTENDED WORKSHOP

Attendees will build a 10’ diameter wind turbine from scratch. There will be two sessions each day (total of 4 sessions). We encourage people to sign up for all 4 sessions if they want hands on experience with every process involved. We’ll start out on Saturday morning with magnets, copper wire and lumber. Tasks will include fabricating the alternator, carving blades and final assembly/testing. We’ll cover every aspect of the construction except for welding and metal work (that’s too loud/dangerous for the Fair) At the end we hope to finish the machine and donate it to the silent auction. Dan Bartmann and the other folks from OtherPower.com all live off grid west of Fort Collins Colorado. They've been involved with the Fair for 6 years as well as lead more intensive workshops for the RMSLA, as well as the MREA and volunteered help at Hugh Piggotts workshops for SEI.

Strawbale Construction and Plaster Workshop - EXTENDED WORKSHOP

Lead by Solarwise, LLC from Salida Colorado. Solarwise Natural Building and Design will lead participants through a hands-on strawbale structure construction workshop. The first workshop teaches the framing of the structure, preparing the bales, basics of load bearing vs. non-load bearing structures, and setting and pinning the bales. The second workshop will continue where the first left off by teaching the construction techniques used during strawbale home building. The third workshop will shift to prepare the structure for stucco plaster, including wrapping the walls to retain the exterior coat. The fourth workshop will finish the structure with a stucco plaster coat.

Run Your Diesel on Straight Vegetable Oil - EXTENDED WORKSHOP

Learn how to convert your diesel car or truck to run on free waste vegetable oil (SVO/WVO) with the flip of a switch. We will cover the stock function of the diesel fuel system and its transformation to WVO. We will compare several popular kits, and show how to create your own. The "how to" of basic wiring, valves, controls, and different options for plumbing. Learn how to build a centrifuge rig to de-water and filter in 1 step, and other filter methods, and testing for water. Several converted vehicles will be available to study. Designed for the beginner to the professional mechanic or layperson. This is the 3rd year this workshop is presented by Curt Busby, Civil Engineer, who runs his car and truck on WVO, and runs the online forum at burnveg.com.

Introduction to RE System for Residential Buildings - EXTENDED WORKSHOP

All participants registering for this workshop should attend the “Introductions to RE Systems for Residential Buildings” on Saturday at 1-2 pm in the Green Building Tent. After the intro workshop, participants registered for this extended workshop will breakout to explore the topic in depth with small group, hands-on instruction. Extended breakout topics include on site residential solar site analysis (actual home site visit to area home, short walk required) PV system design and PV wiring. Lead by Curtis Scheib and Dr. Keri Brown. Crutis and Keri are renewable energy and sustainable building specialists who has worked in environmentally conscious building since the early 1990s. In 1995, Curtis started Eco Builders, a primer straw bale building company, and has used his construction sites for workshops and installation demonstrations every since. He is currently the CEO of Eco Depot USA. Keri has worked as a forest hydrologist, a health care provider, a sustainable builder and is the VP of Eco Depot USA. She has lived with solar since 1988.

Colorado Yurt Company Yurt Raising Workshop - EXTENDED WORKSHOP

Looking for an alternative structure to live, work or play in? Yurts might be your answer. They are much more affordable than traditional building and use up fewer resources. The materials for the round structures can be taken to your building site in one pick-up truck load greatly reducing your carbon footprint. Learn how to set up a yurt during the Colorado Yurt Company’s setup demonstration. See the 20 foot diameter yurt go from component parts to a livable shelter in 3-4 hours.

Stardome Greenhouse Raising Workshop - EXTENDED WORKSHOP

Grow your own food all year round in a small, simple and beautiful space. The Stardome Greenhouse is economical, weather-worthy, efficient and is suited for all climates. Snow falls off, wind goes around, roof vent opens automatically in heat. Developed by a long-time woman gardener who’s lived in many climates, the Stardome Greenhouse 10 to 11-½ ft. diameter sizes are most popular, but the domes can be smaller or larger by changing strut length. This workshop is lead by Lelia Saunders. Since early childhood, Lelia, has been planting and growing. The creator of the Stardome Greenhouse began planting peach pits in her backyard at the age of 5 which grew into fine peach trees . Lelia has founded 2 Visual Arts Holistic Centers, in Vermont & Pagosa Springs, Co. She is committed to organic processes in nutrition as well as Visual Arts. "Life is Art" has been her path.

What a Smart Grid Means for Renewable Energy

With the growing investment in renewable energy the questions around the large-scale integration of these technologies into our electrical grid becoming increasingly important. After returning from the Peace Corps, Nathan Howard found an excellent opportunity to learn more about alternative energy through an engineering master’s program at CSU where he was involved in research with Spirae at the InteGrid Laboratory. Carbon Footprint: An Introduction to “Green Footstep”

A free on-line Building Assessment tool to Reduce Carbon Emissions.

Building design professionals, homeowners, and students can use “Green Footstep” to view the greenhouse gas emissions of a new building construction project, from site development through operation. We will demonstrate how you can use this tool to get on the path that is right for you and towards a more sustainable society. Michael Bendewald is a researcher and consultant at Rocky Mountain Institute. In 2008, he was a Fellow on the NSF East Asia and Pacific Summer Institutes program where he researched the Japanese green building rating system, CASBEE. Erik Bonnett is an analyst and project manager at Rocky Mountain Institute, focusing on sustainable neighborhood and community planning and the potential for the built environment to be a tool to teach sustainable behavior.

FortZED is the effort to create a living Zero Energy District (ZED)- a place where energy needs are supplied by renewable energy sources. Learn about the roles efficiency, conservation, and renewable energy in Northern Colorado. When achieved, FortZED will be one of the largest ZEDs in the world. Mark has lived in Fort Collins since 1980 with his wife and two daughters. After degrees in California, Massachusetts and Colorado (CSU), he served many roles in 25 years at HP. Mark volunteers for science education and sustainable energy. Through three years with FortZED, Mark sees unique opportunities in Northern Colorado.

Sarah Tomsic of Sprout Catering will return to defend her 2008 championship with Chimney Park’s Jason Shaeffer! These Northern Colorado chefs will survey the Colorado September harvest and plan a meal around our local, seasonal ingredients. They will prepare delicious eats right before your eyes and the judges will be playfully picked from the crowd. Come over to experience the creativity of these talented chefs – and maybe you will get to have a taste yourself!
Sol Food: Solar Cooking is Hot!

Everyone cooks and eats food. Let’s look at alternatives to cooking our food using clean energy! Educator, Mary Carhartt, will demonstrate a wide variety of solar cookers that can be used effectively in Colorado to cook carbon free. The environmental science, sociology, and culinary aspects of solar cooking and solar water purification will be discussed and demonstrated. Samples of solar baked goods will be provided.
Food Preservation (w/o canning or freezing)

Wondering how you can still eat local food throughout the winter? Join a Larimer County Master Food Preserver to learn the "how and why" of preserving food at home. This workshop will focus on preservation methods that don’t require the energy that canning and freezing do. Drying of produce or storing in a root cellar are great options for keeping food over the winter.
Bio Dynamic Farming

Biodynamic farming and gardening looks upon the soil and the farm as living organisms. It takes a holistic approach to growing food by leveraging the interconnectedness of soil, plants and animals. Dennis and Bailey Stenson of Happy Heart CSA Farm will give us a glimpse into the world of biodynamic farming & teach us a few tricks for our own gardens at home.
Rainwater Harvesting

Rainwater Harvesting is the act of capturing, storing and later using precipitation. Why is this important in the arid West and how can you collect rain water in your back yard? Visit with Reese Baker, owner of the RainCatcher Inc., to learn the basics behind Rainwater Harvesting.
Backyard Chickens

Why and how to keep chickens: everything you’ll need to know about the ecology and economy of backyard poultry. Topics include benefits to the earth and our selves, coop design, equipment and feed options, poultry physiology/chicken happiness, and gardening synergy. A hand-on equipment display and Q&A session. Teaching this course is Greg Michaud. He & his wife Patty run “The Old Feed Store” and “The Old Farm Stand: A Clean Food Alliance”, hosting local growers and food producers in farmers market and farm-direct sales support.
Native Plants

Native Plant experts from Fort Collins Nursery have selected their favorite native plants including flowering perennials, shrubs and trees! This presentation will cover it all- exceptional features, historical significance, landscape use, planting tips and opportunity for your questions!
Cold Frames

Cold Frames help Colorado gardeners extend their growing season in the early spring and late fall. A Cold Frame is a small unheated outdoor structure used for protecting and acclimatizing seedlings and plants. Our local expert, Scott, will share his knowledge in the many uses for Cold Frames as well as techniques for inexpensive construction.
Rethinking the Bottom Line: Social, Environmental, and Economic Decision Making in Your Home

Josie Plaut, Director of Projects - Institute for the Built Environment at CSU

The current economic situation has most of us rethinking many of our decisions. Companies and organizations are showing that the triple bottom is replacing the conventional bottom line business model. Josie is Director of Projects for the Institute for the Built Environment at Colorado State University. Josie works to facilitate and coordinate green building projects and is an experienced instructor, lecturer and workshop facilitator. This workshop will review the “nuts and bolts” information on what wildlife species require, specific plants for forage and nesting, space requirements, infos of greatest vulnerability and more. Answer the question how to skillfully design beautiful landscapes that maximize the relationship between human beings and nature. Presented by Jim Tolstrup, the Executive Director of the High Plains Environmental Center in Loveland, CO. HPEC works with developers, businesses and homeowners to promote the restoration and conservation of Colorado’s native biodiversity in the suburban environments where we live, work and play.

Colorado expects to receive over $7 billion dollars from the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act signed by President Obama in February 2009. Some of the funds in this law include investing in building efficiency, renewable energy and green jobs. Learn more about these funds and gain insight on potential opportunities for your business. April Wackerman is the Projects Manager with the Institute for the Built Environment (IBE) at Colorado State University. April works to coordinate and facilitate high performance design and construction regionally, in addition to providing mentorship to Construction Management Graduate students working on sustainable building projects at IBE.

Dumpster diving basics: This presentation’s aim is to normalize Diving -- throwing away perfectly good stuff is the ‘weird’ thing to do! Laura Pritchett is the author/editor of five books, INCLUDING THE RECENTLY RELEASED Going Green: True Tales from Gleaners, Scavengers, and Dumpster Divers. Pritchett has also published over fifty essays and short stories in numerous magazines, including The Sun, Orion, High Country News, High Desert Journal, Natural Resources Journal, Matter Journal, Colorado Review, 5280, and her work has been anthologized in several books. From Locally Sustainable to Globally Fair

Dawn Thilmany, Professor of Agriculture and Resource Economics at CSU and Douglas Murray, Director of The Center for Fair and Alternative Trade at CSU.

Values-based activities such as supporting local food systems or committing to green building practices, farming organically or buying fair trade goods, are growing rapidly even during the current economic crisis. Consumers and entrepreneurs alike are turning to certification systems that define and guarantee values like environmental sustainability and social justice are met. This workshop will provide an overview of the range of certification systems available to consumers and businesses as they seek to become more involved in the emerging global conscious consumer economy. The presentations is based on extensive new research by CSU researchers based at the Center for Fair and Alternative Trade. A participatory discussion will focus on specific concerns and needs of local businesses and local consumers.
Sustainable Fitness: Improve Your Vitality While Reducing Wear & Tear

Chinese medicine as a realistic and reasonable course in the treatment of infectious diseases

Introduction to Qi Gong

Qi Gong is an ancient Chinese art that has been used for thousands of years to develop one's Qi or essential energy for improved health and increased longevity. Qi Gong involves individual gentle meditative movements coordinated with breath and visualization that are repeated several times. Qi Gong’s slow, gentle movements powerfully affect the basic health of the individual clearing blockages in the body, releasing stress and tension and allowing the practitioner to come to a quiet and peaceful state.

Kristine Metchikian is a Senior Tai Chi Qi Gong Instructor and a Wu Dang External Qi Healer. With over 8 years of teaching experience, she teaches a comprehensive healing system that includes self massage, Tai Chi, Qi Gong, Taoist meditation, Dao Yin, life philosophy, and offers supportive wellness home products and weight management systems. She continues advanced studies in the US and in China. She is a native of NY and graduate from Pace University, New York City.

Physical Therapy for Back Pain

1 pm - 2 pm Saturday

This presentation will include explanations of different interventions that physical therapists use for back pain. Learn about common muscle imbalances and specific stretches that can help decompress the spine. It will cover postural education, alignment and proper body mechanics, which will help prevent injuries. In addition, basic spine stabilization techniques useful for lifting, bending and preventing common impairments will be addressed.

Somer King, of Momentum Physical Therapy in Fort Collins, has her Doctorate of Physical Therapy and a Masters of Occupational Therapy from the University of St. Augustine for Health Sciences in Florida. Somer combines her knowledge of therapy and yoga and integrates yoga-based exercises into her physical therapy practice to enhance rehabilitation.

Home Energy Monitoring: You can’t manage what you don’t measure. We use speedometers so we don’t get a ticket. We use thermometers so we don’t burn food in the oven. These devices are used for monitoring our daily lives. Why don’t we monitor our home's energy usage so we aren't hit with a expensive electric bill? Many homeowners recognize the benefits of being able to view their energy use (and cost) in real-info with power cost monitoring systems. This workshop will discuss the advantages and disadvantages of home energy monitoring, costs of the options available on the market today and what works best for your home.
Solar PV 101

This workshop provides homeowners with basic knowledge about solar electricity. Topics include: How solar works, Solar PV design considerations, Current rebates and tax credits, and Environmental and financial benefits. After this workshop, participants will have an understanding of how to determine if solar PV is right for their home. Lauren Coyne is a Co-owner and the Education and Outreach Manager for Namaste Solar. She joined the company with a background in education and advocacy. She has designed hundreds of residential solar PV systems and often provides presentations to the community about solar PV.
Hydrolic Hybrid Retrofits

Guy Babbitt, Czero, Inc

Hydraulic Hybrid Retrofit Kits. Hydraulic hybrids are a great way of reducing the fuel consumption of vehicles that start and stop frequently, i.e: city buses, refuse trucks, delivery vehicles, etc. Czero is working with CSU’s Engines and Energy Conversion Laboratory on the development of hydraulic hybrid retrofit kit that is demonstrated at the Fair. This presentation is sure to inspire and spark creative energy for problem solving!
Bikes are the Answer: A Workshop on Bike Maintenance and Creating Community

Fort Collins Bike Co-op

Our communities are made up of diverse group of bikers: commuter cyclists, including those who bike to work, to shop and to run errands, recreational cyclists off all ages who pedal our bike paths, mountain bikers, BMX cyclists, racing cyclists and children who bike to school. This workshop is for all of you, the biking community, that would like to learn the basics of bike maintenance and be reminded of the deeper reasons you choose two wheels instead of four. Presented by the Fort Collins Bike Co-op, a community of cyclists who enjoy tinkering with bikes and who enjoy seeing the others discover the joys of cycling.
Cheese Making

Meg Cattell and her husband Arden Neslon, both veterinarians, enjoy the rewarding life of dairy farming in the Rocky Mountain Region. Windsor Dairy provides raw milk from certified organic, grassfed, Brown Swiss cows on native grass pastures. From their nutritious milk, they make traditional cheeses, butter, cream and yogurt. Join Meg & Arden for an hour to unlock the mysteries of cheese making!
Food Preservation (Canning)

Wondering how you can still eat local food throughout the winter? Join a Larimer County Master Food Preserver to learn all about the "how and why" of preserving food at home. The workshop focuses on canning safety, types of equipment and proper canning methods. This workshop is for beginners or those needing refresher.

Local Home Brewing

Anyone can brew beer sustainably. This workshop, presented by Ali Hamm of CSU, will explore options of building your own brewery using recycled materials, growing your own organic ingredients or buying them from a local farmer, and how to reduce waste while brewing at home. If you like beer, and like saving the planet, this workshop is for you! Ali Hamm has a master’s degree from Colorado State University studying the viability of growing organic hops in Colorado. She has also served as CSU’s “Brewmaster” for the undergraduate Brewing Science and Technology Course. Ali continues to research organic hops through CSU and help small farmers, while brewing her own beer at home.
Gardening

Let weekly KUNC commentator Tom Throgmorton wow you with his abundance of gardening knowledge. He will provide you with gardening tips for late season vegetable production. Techniques to prepare the garden and landscape for winter should be of interest for all attendees. With a question and answer session for all to benefit from.
Composting

Let’s talk compost! Join Addy Elliot and learn to set up, manage, and harvest a backyard compost pile. There will be plenty of time to answer any questions you have about your specific compost needs. 1 lucky person will win materials & consultation for their own customized compost bin! Addy is the Program Coordinator for the Organic Agriculture Program in the Colorado State University’s Soil and Crop Sciences Dept. Her teaching and research interest and experience are in soil fertility, water quality, and organic crop production.

Would you like to know ways to fight pests without having to use harmful synthetic pesticides or insecticides? Then this is the workshop for you! Come learn about AND make biol, bokashi, manure tea, as well as discuss other natural techniques such as companion cropping and pest deterrent planting. Presented by Elliot Cooper who helped startup and run a network of organic greenhouses in 10 communities in the Amazon Basin. He has been successfully gardening with natural fertilizers since 2002.

Thomas will review passive solar strategies using thermal massing and site orientation, including several case studies which integrated active solar with radiant in-floor heat and domestic hot water heating. Get an in-depth look into individual zone pumps versus one large system pump and the pros and cons of different technologies. Thomas Beck has practiced architecture in Colorado since 1983, managing his own firm since 1998. His designs demonstrate not only creativity but commitment to and extensive expertise in the areas of sustainable design and renewable energy. Combining her graphic design education, professional experience and info at the Rocky Mountain Institute, Susan rethinks traditional presentation and production to promote a more responsible relationship with the environment. This interest continues today through her graphic design, art, fashion design and involvement in the handmade movement in Fort Collins.

Social Justice and Sustainability

David Bartecchi, Executive Director – Village Earth

There is a growing critique that the Sustainability and Localization movement has failed to address issues of social justice, food security, social exclusion, and has not challenged many of the underlying contradictions within Western society that is fueling our excessive consumption of global resources. This workshop will seek to create a dialogue among participants on the connections between social justice and sustainability with the goal of defining specific actions that we can take as individuals, groups and institutions. David serves as Executive Director of Village Earth, a not-for-profit community-development organization. He has extensive practical experience in community development, working with grassroots groups on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation since 2000 to recover lands for community-based bison restoration.
Sustainable Fitness: Real Fitness, Food, and Community

When we think about sustainability we often think about transportation, pollution, and recycling but what about fitness? A fitness program should be broad, inclusive, and sustainable. In this workshop we will present a definition of sustainable fitness and suggest some ways to evaluate whether your fitness program is sustainable.

Chris Brown is passionate about fitness, human potential, and stewardship. Chris trained with Al Gore as part of The Climate Project and has presented his version of An Inconvenient Truth to over 5,000 people. More recently Chris has been exploring the integration of community, fitness, and sustainable food.
Chinese medicine and Women's health issues

This workshop will be an education into Chinese medicine as a natural, efficient and holistic healing technique to treat various gynecological discomforts such as debilitating menstrual cramps, poly cystic ovarian syndrome, and infertility. Learn what makes this ancient medical art appropriate in our modern lives.

Jean-christophe Prin graduated from the Atlantic Institute of Oriental Medicine in Fort Lauderdale, FL and “Institut Chuzhen de Medecine Chinoise” in Paris, France. In addition, he completed a four months internship at “Tianjin First Teaching Hospital” in North Eastern China, participating in various treatments in different departments of the hospital. Jean-christophe has been living in Fort Collins, CO for nearly 2 years and opened his own practice downtown in September of last year. He is nationally certified by the NCCAOM (National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine) and is currently licensed to practice acupuncture and herbal medicine in Colorado.
